Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
2009 is when I first opened NEVA face and body Day Spa
I have been a licensed massage therapist since 1998 and worked in a small house in King William for many years.
What is your primary product or service?
Therapeutic Massage, Pregnancy Massage and Results Oriented Skincare Treatments
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Background is commercial property management.
My life dramatically changed after the loss of my 18 year old brother. I needed a change and to get out of my head that was very depressed. A massage school had opened up across the street from my office building and it was an excuse 'not' to go home each night.
I grew up with chronic pain in my neck and my mother had taken me to 'healers' at a very early age. I felt I understood the power of touch and that I had that gift which is why the massage school struck an interest.
I received my certification with the intentions of doing this "on the side" but after only a month in school, I was fascinated by the anatomy and after I became certified, I quit my job (with not one client on my client list) and started my own business in King William. I was broke but I was happy.
For the first 4 years, I managed some of the best restaurants in SA (Silo/Austin Hwy being one of them) in the evenings and worked days offering chair massage at office buildings, worked a few days a week at a chiropractors office and a few here and there at my little office there in KW. From there grew a steady clientele with the KW neighborhood (I had already been living there for a few years.) Many of the B&B's send their visitors to me...then things took off. I had a client list.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I feel that I am in the 'healthcare' industry with the type of massage and skincare we offer. We educate our clients about their skin. We aren't pushy with selling because our product sells itself - they see great results without downtown and expensive prices. Our clients come regularly to maintain a healthy lifestyle with therapeutic massage and skincare (particularly if they have problem skin). We build relationships with our clients...they become our friends. With all the 'chains' around town, I have to offer top notch customer service and products to compete. Our price point is not that of the 'chains' and it's not astronomical like the hotels....we're a happy medium.
One of our favorite specialties that sets us apart is that we specialize in pregnancy massage/skincare. We are the only spa in San Antonio that offers specialty therapeutic massage for pregnant/lactating/postpartum women for both their body and hormonal skincare needs. All ingredient/products and services are safe for mom while pregnant/lactating. www.momeasemassage.com
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Currently one....with the second on the way! Our first location is near the Pearl Brewery and our second location is currently under construction and will be at the newly developed Dominion Ridge Shopping Center off IH10 and Dominion Drive.
It is going to be a beautiful new shopping center in that undeveloped area! I'm so excited! And kinda' scared. Ha!
